August Social Media Ideas 2026

Updated: Mar 19

August is the final stretch of summer. Families are squeezing in last holidays, back-to-school shopping is ramping up and the shift towards autumn starts to creep in. In the UK, the late August bank holiday gives one last long weekend, while Scotland’s bank holiday falls at the start of the month and the Irish bank holiday lands on the first Monday. It’s a transitional month that offers the best of both worlds — summer engagement plus back-to-school commercial opportunity.

Content Pillars for August

There are 7 main content theme categories I recommend for every social media plan: Promotional, Entertainment, Customer Focused, Motivational, Community, Educational and Personal. Each category builds awareness, interest and engagement differently. Test content types for each to see what works best for your audience.

Here are my top 3 recommended content pillars for August 2026:

1) Promotional

Back-to-school is one of the biggest retail events of the year. Even if you’re not in education, the back-to-school mindset drives consumers to invest in productivity tools, fashion, tech and self-improvement. End-of-summer sales create urgency, and three bank holidays across the UK and Ireland provide spending weekends.

2) Community

Families spending time together, summer holidays winding down and the last outdoor activities create perfect conditions for community content. National Dog Day, International Cat Day and World Photography Day give you fun hooks for UGC campaigns.

3) Educational

As the year crosses the two-thirds mark, your audience is looking for ways to level up. Educational content positions your brand as an authority heading into the business-heavy autumn months. South Asian Heritage Month (until 17 Aug) also provides educational opportunities.
